Young, Weathered Love

Our love was weathered

Though we were young

Life did a work on us

Suffering frayed our edges

It’s hard to impress anyone -

Let alone a spouse -

When life is burning you alive

And it often was

Mix together near death experiences

Medical trauma

And trial after relentless trial

And you get a couple who has weathered some storms

My heart is torn

I miss the carefree version of us

Full of hope and dreams

Loving life and each other

But we were blissfully unaware of so much

Lovely shadows of what we would become

Suffering would bring out our worst

While transforming us into our best

The selfishness in our hearts

Hurtful and impatient

Learned forgiveness

Steadfastness and faithfulness

We had to see our hearts more clearly

Before we could love each other well

On our worst days

As much as on our best

Our love became weathered

But sturdier too

It stood strong

Because it stood on grace

Our weathered

Was beautiful

Refined By fire

Taught to endure

We learned to trust in a better love

Than our own

A love that held us still

When death did us part
